Cat in the Corner - Baby Quilt

Finished size :  35"x 44"
5-1/4" blocks

 Fabric requirements (40” fabric):

Main/border print  -  25 inches

Background  -  24 inches

Medium print - 8 inches

Dark Print - 12 inches

This quilt is made up of two different pieced blocks, 'Triangle Design' and 'Rail Fence', and plain blocks of the main fabric.  Choose a lively and colorful main fabric for best results.

 -         From main print cut six 5-3/4" squares. Also cut two 4" strips and two 5" strips..  Set the strips aside for the border.

-         From the background fabric cut six 2-1/4" strips and cut two 4-1/4" strips.  Cut the 4-1/4" strips into 4-1/4" squares.

-         From the medium print cut three 2-1/4" strips.

-         From the dark print cut three 3-1/2" strips then cut these strips into forty-eight 3-1/2" squares. Cut the squares on one diagonal to make triangles.

To make 'triangle design' blocks, sew a triangle to each side of the 4-1/4" squares.  Press seams towards darker fabrics.

To make the rail blocks, sew a background print fabric 2-1/4" strip to each side of a medium print 2-1/4" strip. Press seams towards the darker fabrics. Cut these strips into 5-3/4" segments.

Using the main print squares, 17 rail blocks, and 12 triangle design blocks, lay the quilt out as shown in diagram and sew together.  Sew five inch border strips to each side of the quilt then four inch strips to top and bottom of the quilt.

General instructions for sandwiching, turning and quilting/tying baby quilts: Lay batting on a flat surface and smooth.  Place flannel-backing fabric over batting, soft (right) side up, and smooth.  Place quilt top, right side down, on top of flannel and smooth. Pin around edges then machine stitch a generous ¼” around outside of quilt top, leaving about a 10” opening to turn the quilt.  Trim backing and batting. Through the opening, turn the quilt sandwich so right side of the quilt top is facing out.  Whipstitch or machine stitch the opening closed.  Pin sandwich as necessary then machine quilt ¼” from edge of quilt. Machine quilt or tie such that quilting lines or ties are no more than 4" apart.
